CITY SPORT ROUND-UP

Khutia scores the winner for Bosco

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Mumbai: When Don Bosco ‘B' (Matunga) were readying for their MSSA Under-16 Division IV final against St Pius (Mulund) on Thursday, they didn't have to look at Michael Owen's weekend exploits for inspiration. They simply turned to their A team that has won four tournaments this season and are still counting.
Romil Khutia tapped in from close to hand Bosco a
1-0 win before Henderson Dias blasted a penalty wide. “The boys have been seeing what their mates from the ‘A' team are achieving and wanted to prove a point themselves,'' said coach Leslie Machado.
But the star of the day was 14-year-old James Fernandes. The Bosco midfielder was giving as good as he got from his physically bigger and stronger opponents. Fernandes chased every ball and made all the right passes. What is special about his effort is that he had just recovered from a bout of Malaria and was only his second game in the tournament.

Romil Khutia of Don Bosco (Blue) attempts an acrobatic kick in the MSSA division IV final against St Pius School. Khutia's goal helped Bosco pull of a 1-0 win and got them their fifth title this year

Don Bosco win maiden minky hockey title

M UMBAI: A fine goal and an assist by Jonathan Fernandes helped Don Bosco (Matunga) win the maiden minky hockey title by beating St Stanislaus ( Bandra) 2-1.
Jonathan opened the scoring mid way in the first half as he latched on to a stray ball in the attacking zone and found the far corner with an on-the-run rasping hit that found no answer from rival keeper Clinton D'Abreo. Keanu D'Souza almost scored thereafter but for timely pad stuck out by Clinton. However, Stanislaus failed to deny their rivals for a long time. It was Jonathan in the thick of action again, sending a measured diagonal at the far post for Jerome Pesso to connect home. Olympian Harpal Singh conducted a short clinic for the children as well.

SCOTT ON THE ROCKS

Striker D'Souza scores in his first start this season to help Bosco win their fourth title

AASHRAY HARIHARAN

MATUNGA'S Don Bosco emerged victorious in the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) Under-16 football league, pipping defending champions St Stanislaus 2-0 yesterday, thereby winning the league for the fourth time in the last six years. Such was Bosco's dominance, that even the defending champions, hitherto unbeaten in the league, resorted to hitting desperate long shots towards the goal.
Bosco scored early through Adnan Khan in the second minute and then doubled their lead, as Scott D'- Souza scored ten minutes later. Scott, who started his first game yesterday, caused plenty of problems for the Stanislaus defenders with his well built physique and towering frame.
Scott, who was a regular benchwarmer in the initial rounds, came on as a substitute against Bombay Scottish in their last league match to score the winning goal. A hattrick followed in the Ahmed Sailor Cup and Scott's impressive run of form meant he was an automatic selection for the finals. “He is a powerfully built boy and I would often bring him on in the second half to take advantage of the opponents' tiring defenders. His recent goalscoring form made him impossible to ignore and I'm happy he vindicated my faith by scoring here,” said Bosco coach Leslie Machado. Scott for his part is just happy exorcising the ghosts that haunted him after he missed a penalty kick against Stanislaus in the finals of the U-14 league last year.
“I'm happy I finally managed to score and make amends for last year's penalty miss against the same opposition,” Scott said, adding that it doesn't make a difference whether he starts or comes on as a substitute as the way he plays remains the same.
